Greetings from Dean

I am pleased to welcome you to the Faculty of Forestry at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).  The faculty was one of the pioneer faculties during the establishment of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1971, which was then renamed as Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1997. As the only tertiary forestry academic school at that time, the faculty produced quality foresters for the need of the country in the public as well as in the private sectors. The faculty was fortunate to have been assisted by international forestry experts under the auspices of several international agencies. Together with the local experts, the Faculty of Forestry built a reputation as being one of the most established tropical forestry education and research in this region.

As the field of forestry evolved, it was apparent that the traditional forestry programme was not sufficient to cater for the increasingly specialized public and private sectors. As a result, the Bachelor Science of Forestry was reviewed and the Bachelor of Wood Science and Technology was introduced in 2006. With the growing interest in outdoor recreation as a field of study, the Bachelor of Parks and Recreation Science was introduced in 2010. These programmes made the Faculty of Forestry at UPM the most complete forestry school in the country. Together with the increasing number of Masters and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates from within and outside the country, the faculty made continuous contribution towards the human capital needs of the forestry sector as a whole.

The Faculty of Forestry has an extensive network with many universities and agencies abroad and locally built upon mutually beneficial collaborations, that allow easy mobility of students and staff to carry out joint-research, practical trainings and attachments. Through such mobility programmes, the experience and exposure gathered would assist the students gain a global perspective to the field of forestry. The faculty staffs are also engaged in consultancy and community outreach activities, which is a testimony to the depth of expertise available at the faculty.

The Faculty of Forestry has come a long way since its inception in 1971. It has grown to become the leading forestry education centre in the country, with a wide array of expertise and support facilities such as the Sultan Idris Shah Forestry Education Centre (SISFEC).  The Faculty of Forestry at Universiti Putra Malaysia aims to be the most dynamic and relevant forestry school  in the country and will continue to produce human-capital of the highest quality, relevant research and community-service aimed at boosting the forestry sector in the country to remain important socio-economically.
